April 20, 2014

Objectives:

  1.  Give a clear definition of chisels;
  2. Correctly name four (4) different types of chisels;
  3. Use correctly labeled diagrams to portray the different types of chisels;
  4. Clearly explain one safety rule for using the chisel;
  5. Accurately outline the two (2) categories into which chisels are grouped and;
  6. Correctly explain the rationale behind ensuring that the chisel is in proper working condition.

1. What is a chisel?

- A chisel is a hand tool used mainly for cutting joints, but it is also used for cutting out any required shapes in wood and for paring.

2. What are four (4) types of chisels used in Woodwork?

- Four (4) types of chisels that are frequently used in the average Woodwork shop are
  • Bevel-edged chisels
  • Firmer chisels
  • Registered chisels
  • Mortise chisels

4. Chisel safety tips.

  •  Keep both hands back of the cutting edge at all times when using chisels.
  • Always shield the cutting edge when not using.
  • Always wear safety goggles when using a wood chisel.
  • Never place a wood chisel in your pocket.
  • Use the appropriate tool for prying and screwing, not a chisel.

5. The uses of chisels.

Chisels are generally grouped into two categories based on their use:

  • Paring- using the chisel to remove thin strips of wood without applying the mallet.
  • Chopping- striking the chisel with a mallet or hammer to remove chunks of wood.

6. Rationale behind ensuring that the chisel is in proper working condition.

-The use of a dull chisel is a very dangerous practice not only in woodwork, but in other fields as well. When the blade of a chisel is dull. more energy is required to push the blade through the stock and this increases the likelihood that the tool may slip and possibly gouge someone or cause any other kind of harm On the other, much safe hand, a sharp chisel passes through stock much easier once the proper technique is used and as well as saving time and energy, a safer working environment is created. Also, ensure that chisel handles are firmly attached to the blade.
